As many countries and cities pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest, the Zero Carbon Building Accelerator, a BEA project, has been supporting governments in implementing ambitious climate goals through national roadmaps and subnational action plans for building decarbonization.

The Zero Carbon Building Accelerator launched in early 2021 in Colombia and Türkiye, where WRI and local leads, the Colombia Green Building Council and WRI Türkiye, have worked closely with national and local stakeholders from across the building lifecycle to identify transformative actions that build systemic change towards zero carbon buildings. The ZCBA has also developed a pipeline of additional cities across the Building Efficiency Accelerator network by leveraging the resulting tools, best practices and financial solutions. Six of these cities (Nagpur, India; Laikipia County, Kenya; and Belen, Curridabat, Moravia and Santa Ana, Costa Rica) have developed city action plans that align with national targets, NDCs and policies towards zero carbon.
