BEA at COP23: City Successes

At an event in Bonn, Germany on the sidelines of this year’s UNFCCC climate talks, BEA cities shared their experiences prioritizing building efficiency actions and working towards implementation, highlighting the progress the BEA and partner cities have made over the last 2 years. BEA global partners including the Global Environment Facility, ICLEI, Johnson Controls, and the World Resources Institute participated in the event.

Councillor Solly Msimanga, Executive Mayor of City of Tshwane, South Africa spoke about developing Tshwane’s green building guidelines as the city’s policy commitment to the BEA, and retrofitting an 8-story building as the demonstration project. In addition, the Executive Mayor highlighted the development of Tshwane House, a newly developed green building that serves as a head office for city staff. In addition to bringing city departments together in one physical space and improving their coordination, Tshwane House has helped improve staff awareness about the multiple benefits of green buildings.

Engineer Faisal Ali Rashid, Demand Side Management Director of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, United Arab Emirates shared Dubai’s targets for green buildings. Dubai’s Demand Side Management Strategy sets a target to improve energy efficiency 30% by 2030 compared to business as usual. To reduce the consumption of new buildings, Dubai introduced Green Building Regulations for government buildings in 2010 that became mandatory for all buildings in 2014. To retrofit existing buildings, Dubai relies on super ESCO Etihad Energy Services. Etihad ESCO has already facilitated the retrofit of 3,000 buildings in the municipality with a goal to retrofit 30,000 buildings by 2030, or one-quarter of the existing buildings in Dubai. A new building energy efficiency ranking system, with silver, gold and platinum levels, will further motivate the adoption of green buildings.

Belgrade Workshop Accelerates Building Efficiency Improvements Across Central-Eastern Europe

In September, Belgrade, the BEA and UN Environment organized a regional building efficiency workshop with over 90 participants from cities across Eastern Europe to facilitate knowledge exchange including technical assistance, financing models, policies and programs. HRH Crown Prince Alexander gave a keynote address and participants shared experiences and solutions for accelerating building efficiency and finance.

China’s clean, green buildings of the future

China’s 13th Five Year Plan for Building Energy Efficiency and Green Building Development includes aggressive goals for green building construction and renovation, including a requirement for 50% of all new urban buildings to be certified green buildings. The plan also specifies pilot programs for constructing and renovating energy efficient primary and secondary schools, community hospitals and public buildings. Read more here.

The Building Efficiency Accelerator Launches Activities in East Asia

On March 22, 2017, the BEA’s East Asia launch brought together stakeholders from government, non-profit and the private sectors to showcase the building efficiency work of three leading Chinese districts – Changning District, Wuxi City High-Tech Industrial Development Zone and Suzhou Taihu New City – and two current BEA cities – Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and Iskandar, Malaysia.

The launch forum was co-hosted by BEA global partners including ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability East Asia Secretariat (ICLEI EAS), World Resources Institute (WRI), Johnson Controls (JCI), and the China Society for Urban Studies (CSUS). The forum took place at the largest annual green building conference in China, the Thirteenth International Conference on Green and Energy-Efficient Building & New Technologies and Products Expo in Beijing.

Along with districts sharing experiences and best practices in promoting building sector energy efficiency, the forum included an expert panel discussion and an interactive assessment activity to map stakeholder views on a set of building efficiency topics.

BEA at the SEforALL Forum

The Sustainable Energy for All Forum is a landmark gathering that celebrates the global sustainable energy movement.

Over 1,000 high-level representatives from government, business, civil society and international organizations gathered in New York City from April 3-5, 2017 for the 3^rd Sustainable Energy for All Forum – its theme “Going Further, Faster – Together.”

The Building Efficiency Accelerator was well-represented at the event: Nine BEA cities and 18 BEA partner organizations were present, totaling nearly 50 people. The BEA had a packed agenda over the three days, including leading a session with cities and finance experts on financing urban building efficiency and conducting a training on how cities can get their building efficiency priorities funded. Targeting Customers’ Needs to Improve Building Efficiency in Milwaukee

For some building owners, renovations—including retrofitting heating, cooling, and lighting systems—can be a way to attract tenants. For homeowners, improving insulation can make for more comfortable as well as energy efficient homes. For industry, more efficient equipment means expanding production lines while saving money. After many years of learning, the city of Milwaukee in the United States has developed a comprehensive suite of building efficiency programs that benefit the general public while meeting the needs and motivations of each of these individual sectors.
