Recife has an ambitious policy goal to implement energy efficiency and install solar photovoltaic panels (PV) in all large public buildings. Additionally, the city has a pilot program retrofitting one municipal building, the Women’s Hospital of Recife, as an example for a larger retrofit program.

With the close of the second phase of the BEA, Recife planned to install energy efficiency measures and the PV panels in all large public buildings. These retrofits have been projected to reduce the hospital’s energy costs by 60% or more. Recife was also evaluating two additional buildings to enter its pilot program pipeline at the end of 2020. A citywide Municipal Energy Management Plan leverages the success of the hospital and other pilot projects to adopt viable energy savings standards and replicate the incentives in 25 buildings by the end of 2022.
