uMalthuze joins Tshwane, Msunduzi and KwaDukuza in the BEA’s South African cohort. uMalthuze received a BEA Leadership Grant in cooperation with ICLEI Africa to develop green building guidelines and training plans for the municipality and to scale up energy retrofits in municipal buildings and infrastructure.
The municipality has been gathering baseline data since 2013 and began stakeholder mapping to identify key industries and businesses in the buildings sector in 2018. uMalthuze began reviewing stakeholder engagement and compiling green building guidelines in early 2020. Looking ahead, the municipality will integrate the green building guidelines into its climate change action plan and reduce energy consumption from coal sources by 20% in 2025.
