The State of Sonora was a BEA deep engagement partner in 2018-2020. In addition to this two-year engagement, the team received a leadership grant to support the Sonora Buildings Challenge Program and has worked in tandem with the Mexican national government to establish a standardized Energy Efficiency Certificate.
Sonora is committed to adopting and implementing a municipal-level mandatory energy code to apply to all new construction based on efficiency norms and model codes. In addition to revolutionizing new building construction, the city also has a target to reduce energy consumption by 30% in existing buildings by 2025.
As part of the city’s coordination with the BEA, Sonora has created the Technical Advisory Group (GTA) integrating energy efficiency experts from the academic, public and private sectors. The GTA has informed the success of BEA work in Sonora by ensuring active and engaged stakeholders with a strong commitment to reducing energy demand and strengthening legal frameworks for more efficient construction pathways. The GTA launched a successful private-sector Buildings Challenge at the end of 2020.
