Msunduzi adopted a new green building guideline toolkit in 2017, which is included in new building construction and existing building retrofits.

To aid this endeavor, Msunduzi received a BEA Leadership Grant in coordination with ICLEI Africa to assess the green building guideline program and develop training plans. Msunduzi has also employed a pilot project exploring baseline assessments of four municipal buildings (City Hall, Professor Nyembezi Gallway House and AS Chetty buildings). The assessment was completed in June 2020 and identified suitable improvement strategies that the city will implement in the four buildings during the 2021 fiscal year, pending budget approval.
