The KwaDukuza Municipality joined the BEA as part of a cohort of South African cities in the Kwazulu-Natal Compact. The cohort received a leadership grant for support from ICLEI Africa on green building guideline implementation and industry training.

KwaDukuza municipality has taken the lead in the implementation of its green building guidelines, by renovating the Nokukhanya Luthuli House municipal office building with the following green building elements: LED sensor lights, rainwater harvesting tanks, double-glazed windows, and energy-efficient air conditioners.
