Santa Ana received a BEA Leadership Grant as part of the Costa Rican cohort coordinating with the Green Building Council of Costa Rica. The grant facilitated a stakeholder engagement process to prioritize potential BEA commitments for Santa Ana. Stakeholder recommendations included improving codes and standards and conducting public building energy management improvements and retrofits.

In summer 2019, Santa Ana’s city council approved its BEA commitment, and the city hosted a kickoff workshop with engagement from 35 participants, including national and local government; NGOs; building managers; design and consulting professionals; product and service providers; and financial investors. The city of Santa Ana and its partner, the Green Building Council of Costa Rica, together identified four potential projects to be developed.
